Description

Do your students know how many Earths it would take if everyone lived like them? This ecological footprint activity takes that question from abstract to personal. Students use real online tools to calculate their own impact, analyze their results, and create a meaningful reflection. A perfect fit for your Human Impacts unit, Environmental Science class, or Earth Day lesson.

What's Included (24 Pages)

  • Academic / Honors Version: open-ended questions, written analysis, and data interpretation
  • Scaffolded Version: sentence frames, fill-in-the-blank, structured tables, and a bilingual (English/Spanish) vocabulary guide for ELL and IEP students
  • Full Teacher Guide with 3 complete lesson plan options
  • Answer Key with sample responses and teacher notes
  • 2 differentiated rubrics (written reflection + illustrated footprint assessment)
  • Footprint outline templates for the illustrated reflection option

Three Lesson Plan Options

  • Full Activity (2 class periods): Research, calculate, redesign, and reflect
  • One Period + Homework: Complete Parts 1–4 in class; reflection assigned for home
  • Sub Plan / One Period: Fully independent; no teacher required after setup

What Students Do

Students navigate two real websites: footprintnetwork.org and footprintcalculator.org to explore biocapacity, overshoot day, and their personal ecological footprint data. They calculate their results across land type and consumption categories (Food, Housing, Transportation, Goods, Services), then propose changes and retake the quiz to see the impact. The activity closes with a student choice reflection: a written one-page response or a labeled illustrated footprint.

Differentiation Built In

The scaffolded version isn't just a simplified worksheet, it includes structured recording tables that reduce working memory load, visual category icons for website navigation, circle-one prompts, and sentence starters for the reflection. Designed to reduce language production demands without reducing thinking demands.

Standards Aligned

Supports NGSS standards across both middle and high school:

  • MS-ESS3-3, MS-ESS3-4, MS-LS2-5
  • HS-ESS3-1, HS-ESS3-4, HS-LS2-1, HS-LS2-2, HS-LS2-7, HS-LS4-6

Cross-cutting concepts: Cause and Effect and Scale, Proportion, and Quantity

Fits Multiple Courses

  • Biology
  • Environmental Science
  • Earth Science
  • AP Environmental Science
  • Integrated Science

Teachers are asking...answered:

Do students need accounts for the websites?

Students need an email to begin the footprint calculator. School email addresses work best. A troubleshooting guide is included in the teacher guide.

What if a website is blocked?

The teacher guide includes workarounds for both sites and instructions for offline modifications.

Can I use this as a sub plan?

Yes. Lesson Plan 3 is written specifically for independent work with no teacher setup required after distributing materials.
