This engaging inquiry lab is ideal for student groups or as an interactive teacher demonstration. Leveraging their prior knowledge of the pH scale, acids, and bases, students will predict the pH of common household items and identify unknown substances based on their pH levels.
Using a red cabbage indicator solution, students will test the pH of everyday substances. If you're conducting this lab in person, any pH indicator can be used as a substitute!
Here's what you'll get:
- A ready-to-print student lab handout, complete with data tables, analysis questions, and conclusion prompts.
- A comprehensive teacher guide in PDF format, featuring lab preparation instructions, a materials list, a detailed lesson plan, and an answer key for the lab questions.
This activity assumes students have prior knowledge of the pH scale, including what defines an acid (H+) and a base (OH-), making it an excellent way to reinforce and apply these foundational concepts.
