Transcription Translation Practice Worksheet Winter Holiday Protein Synthesis

Protein synthesis is a process that requires repetition for students to be successful. Give your students some fun practice with transcription and translation this holiday season with TWO winter/holiday-themed worksheets. The first two-page worksheet gives students a DNA sequence. When students transcribe and translate the sequence, they are left with a winter or holiday term (using the single-letter abbreviation for the amino acids). The second worksheet is set up the same way but the secret message is a classic holiday song title.

Keep your students engaged with content up until break with this winter-themed handout. Each worksheet comes with THREE differentiated versions:

1. Version 1 (approaching): Simple DNA to mRNA to amino acid sequence to decode the secret message with the codons grouped in threes
2. Version 2 (meeting): Same as Version 1 but adds tRNA anticodon sequence.
3. Version 3 (exceeding): The codons are not grouped in threes. The students must identify Start codon before translating, then students group codons into threes after identifying the start codon. Finally, students must identify the stop codon to know when to stop translating.
